When it comes to the most iconic road trips on UK soil, Scotland’s North Coast 500 – or NC500 as it is often abbreviated – is certainly up there! Exploring some of the most beautiful scenery and secluded landscapes the Scottish mainland has to offer, this route isn’t for the faint-hearted, yet it is the perfect trip for those new to overlanding.

Here we share our top tips for conquering this incredible route and making the most of every single moment.

DO know what to expect

The NC500 may be one of the most amazing coastal touring routes on the planet, but it is important to understand exactly what you’ll be facing. This route is over 500 miles in total – 516 to be exact! – which takes time to negotiate properly, even on four wheels.

In theory, you can complete the NC500 in five days, but we’d recommend reserving 7 to 10 days to do this with stop-offs and sightseeing.

DON’T underestimate its remoteness

The North Coast 500 route may be well publicised online, yet in person you’ll find no such guidance. This is why Love from Scotland recommends you pack one very simple accessory in particular:

“The NC500 is not a way marked route and the highlands of Scotland are renowned for not having a 3g or even in some places a mobile signal, you will need actually need a paper map of the North Coast 500 route. Use the wifi in your accommodation to download your daily sections of the route to Google Maps.”

DO make time for sightseeing

The North Coast 500 isn’t a route you should rush. There are tons of sights to see along the way, including these top NC500 things to do.

Do the route well and you’ll be rewarded with stunning scenery, including unspoilt habitats, fairytale castles, ancient structures, dramatic cliff-top views, white sandy beaches that wouldn’t be out of place in the Caribbean, historic villages, and endless inland glens.

DON’T forget to upgrade

If you’re planning to take on the North Coast 500 by 4×4 or pickup – which we would certainly advise – getting your vehicle primed and ready for this very long journey is important. No 4×4 or pickup is beyond improvement, and there are countless parts and accessories that will make that 500-plus mile journey a breeze.

In-cab, make passenger comfort a priority by installing a roof console. Do the same up top and in the boot by adding one of our top-rated roof racks or drawer systems to make sure all the essentials are organised and accessible every step of the way.

Stocking up on recovery gear is another must ahead of this epic road trip. With the right recovery equipment, you can rest safe in the knowledge that you are ready to self-rescue should the worst happen and you become stranded in the middle of nowhere – which really is a possibility on this route!

Improving your 4×4 or pickup mechanically, with a well-timed suspension or brake kit upgrade, is also a great idea for long distance trips.
