Negotiating the world’s toughest terrains isn’t just a matter of preparing your 4×4 with the right upgrades. Whether taking on one of these top desert trails or heading to snowier climes, you’ll need the right supplies to really make the most of your chosen route and, more importantly, come out the other side!
Knowing how to use your supplies to your advantage should the worst happen however is important. Read on to discover the 4WD recovery rules to live by during your next off-road outing.
Have confidence going solo
In the vast majority of off-road scenarios and with the right recovery supplies, there’s no reason why self-recovery shouldn’t be an option. In fact, in the most remote environments, self-recovery may be your only option!
Before you depart, get to know your recovery gear and how to use it inside-out, so if you do have to self-recover, you know exactly what to do. Whether you’re an off-roading beginner or simply don’t want to go solo, travelling with a fellow 4×4 enthusiast is an alternative that will provide extra peace of mind.
Think before leaving your vehicle
There are a couple of things you shouldn’t do if you find yourself stuck in the middle of nowhere. Trying the same technique over and over again won’t help to free a stuck vehicle for instance. Instead take a different tack (more speed, less speed, different angles etc.) to improve your chances of success.
You should also avoid leaving your vehicle as Practical Motoring explains:
“…do not leave your vehicle unless you are absolutely, 100% certain you can easily walk to safety, both distance and direction. And in the case of the Outback in the hot sun, just don’t even think about it. Many people have died trying to walk out. You can survive overnight in a car without water or food, but your chances are much reduced if you’re sleeping unprotected in the bush. Your vehicle is easy to find and offers protection from the elements, so stay with it.”
Play the waiting game
While doing nothing won’t be the first recovery rule that springs to mind if you become stuck, playing the waiting game may actually be just the ticket for getting your 4×4 out of trouble. With time, track conditions may alter – sand will cool, wet tracks will dry etc. – making it easier for you to free your vehicle.
Use recovery supplies wisely
Stocking up on the right recovery supplies will not only mean you’re prepared to get your vehicle out of some sticky situations but could also provide the boost to tackle self-recovery confidently.
Using the right tool for the job is of course vital to your success when self-recovering and will mean far less risk. There are some recovery essentials no 4×4 should be without, including but not limited to a winch, puncture repair kit, recovery boards, recovery rope, snatch strap, tree trunk protector, winch extension strap, recovery damper, leather recovery gloves, tyre deflator, D-shackle and snatch block.
Thankfully, we provide a complete range of recovery gear to ensure you have all you need to keep your vehicle safe and moving when off-roading.
