It’s estimated that 4X4’s make up around a third of all cars sold in the UK and their popularity continues to soar going into the second decade of the 21st century.

Not only are these vehicles aesthetically pleasing, but they are also surprisingly versatile and reliable.

But is there more than simply looks and reliability keeping 4X4s in garages across the country? Just what it is that makes these kings of the road so desirable?

Elevated driving

There is a certain power that comes with driving from an elevated position and this is one of the primary factors that bring so many drivers to the 4X4 cause

Elevated driving doesn’t just give you a vague air of superiority though, it also gives you better visibility of the road and other drivers and better overall accessibility.

Safety first

Particularly when it comes to driving in harsh winter conditions or for those living in rural locations, there is undoubtedly greater safety associated with 4X4 driving.

For one thing, the traction is more reliable as the engine power is going to all four wheels and with most models, you can even switch to ‘2WD’ to preserve power. In wet conditions, the extra stability that comes with a 4X4 could save your life.

Modifications

If you want to make your vehicle your own, there are few better options than a 4X4. Whether you want to install a roof rack for flexible holiday options, add a long-range fuel tank or upgrade your 4X4 suspension, the scene is wealthy with upgrade potential.

Exploring the countryside

Not all 4X4 drivers enjoy taking their vehicles off-road but it’s nice to know that the option is always there, even if it’s not something you considered. In the occasional instances that you will be venturing off the beaten track, you’ll be able to do so safely.

Say you’ve got tickets for a music festival and you’ll need to traverse a farmer’s field to reach the site? Or maybe you fancy a weekend break mountain biking and the trails are a little more mountainous than you were expecting? With a 4X4 you’ll always be ready to go.

You will never get stuck in the mud

That’s right. We all know there’s nothing worse than breaking down in the middle of nowhere but when you buy a 4X4, you’ll never have to suffer the indignity of calling out the mechanics because you’ve been caught in a particularly nasty puddle.

Space and capacity

4X4 vehicles are larger than their 2WD counterparts, which means more headroom, legroom and boot space.

Seats are often more adjustable too, which makes them that much easier to get in and out of and to install or remove child seats.

There’s a good reason why 4X4s are so popular with families. They can also carry more weight than conventional 2WD cars and are powerful enough to tow anything from a caravan to a horsebox if required.

And that’s before we even get started on the variety of options, the availability of electric vehicles and hybrids and the sense you’ll get of just being a little bit better than everyone else on the road.

There’s one thing for sure though; once you go 4X4, you won’t be going back.
