Recovery points are a self-rescue basic that no off-roader should be without. Unlike tie-down points, which are more often than not manufactured using thin steel, aftermarket recovery points are designed, tested and developed specifically for recovery. As a result, they can sustain certain loads when winching or snatch strapping.
The best recovery points aren’t only robust, but ‘rated’ to handle a specific load. You can find out more about rated recovery points here.
While commonly fitted to the front of 4x4s and pickup trucks, rear fitting is also recommended. Read on to discover why as well as the top recovery points for the job and how to get started with installation.
Do I need a rear recovery point?
A rear recovery point is a great move for every off-roading enthusiast. You can’t after all predict which position your vehicle will need to be recovered from, so keep your options open by covering both bases.
Here WhichCar? explains why a rated rear recovery point really is the best option when recovering your vehicle:
“A rear recovery is often needed to extract a vehicle, but when it comes to a rear recovery point the best (often only) recovery point available is the towbar hitch (not the towball)… Although we normally concentrate on designing front recovery points, a rear recovery point is just as important. In most cases a (rated) recovery hitch in a towbar is a safe and acceptable point to use. A towball is not ever – never ever – acceptable to use as a recovery point.”

Where do I get started with fitting?
The safety and reliability of your recovery points, including our top-rated AVM recovery points, depends on proper mounting. A recovery point is after all only as strong as its mounting position. You leave yourself vulnerable to serious injury if your recovery point is mounted or used incorrectly.
With AVM, you have all you need to fit your new recovery point correctly. While some drilling is required – you’ll need four holes to mount onto your vehicle – installation is easy. AVM recovery points can be fitted to the chassis of your vehicle or its metal bumpers. It is however vital that the surface they are being attached to is sufficiently secured to your vehicle and able to withstand the amount of force being applied.
The mounting area should also be flat and sturdy. You can make thinner surfaces (measuring less than 1.5mm) suitable for recovery point mounting by using the backing plate provided for extra reinforcement.
