When it comes to giving your 4×4 a lift you generally have two options – a body lift or a suspension lift. The former raises the body of your vehicle away from the frame, whereas a suspension lift raises the ride height to improve off-road performance. A body lift might be a little cheaper but it only offers a cosmetic upgrade with very little in the way of improvement when it comes to actual driving performance.

When it comes to a suspension upgrade, you have two options:-

  • Replace all components by removing the old springs and associated components like shock absorbers and replacing them with a new kit such as this one by OME. This is exactly as it sounds – longer suspension to lift the chassis away from the axle. This is also the only method that will also increase articulation.
  • Install a suspension spacer kit though this has no real functional benefit.

The Nissan Navara D40 was Europe’s best selling pickup when it first launched in 2005 thanks to its imposing looks, large frame and deceptive power, with 2.5 diesel and V6 engine options. While it was eventually outsold by the Ford Ranger and has been out of production for the last few years, it’s popular among upgraders as the stock suspension is notoriously soft and can sag at higher mileages. 

When upgrading, however, note that the Spanish model sold in the UK differs from the Thai model sold in other markets so care is needed when selecting upgrades that you’re getting the right parts for the right specific model.

A family favourite

Due to its affordability and reliability, the D40 has been a popular 4×4 choice among domestic users and it is often seen in the driveways of family homes. It is also, however, quite easy to turn this big burly creature into a competent green laning machine with a decent lift. It’s a famously easy car to drive and while it might not be quite as nippy as its SUV counterpart the Pathfinder, it is a much more capable off-road ride, though it can feel quite floaty on the roads.

It really comes alive off-road and feels brisk in most situations. It’s also a vehicle that is very popular with upgraders, as many models are approaching 20-years-old now and the factory leaf springs in the rear suspension tend to suffer after a decade of heavy use.

The full package

As for how much lift you want or need, the OME lift kit is a great choice and will allow for a standard of around 2 inches of lift that will be ideal for the vast majority of users. It will, however, also give you newer, longer shock absorbers too, which will drastically increase ride quality and articulation. 

You also have the option of choosing different spring rates for heavier rides. If you are looking for a modest lift with increased ride quality and load-carrying capacity, the OME suspension lift kit is probably your safest bet. Whichever manufacturer you opt for, however, a complete kit is a better way to achieve optimal results than going for individual components from different manufacturers.
