While you might have bought your 4×4 as a bit of a hobby vehicle to go bashing around green lanes in, it’s just as likely that you also bought it to be a solid vehicle to get you from A to B. Indeed, even the best off-road trails in the world are only initially accessible by road. That’s why it’s important your 4×4 is not only ready to hit the tracks but to hit the road too.
Just like a regular car, you will have to pass your MOT every year if you want it to be road-legal. And here’s how to check if your rig is ready for it.
General safety
Check that the seat belts are all functional and that they click into their housings comfortably. Also, ensure that all doors and windows are operational and that your first-aid kit and any other safety gear is where it needs to be.
Under the hood
Check all your fluid levels, belts, batteries and terminals to ensure everything is working. While you’re in this general area of the vehicle, also check the filters for excess dust and debris and clean or replace the filters if needed.
Under the body
Under your 4×4 you should inspect it for potential fluid leaks and loose components. An underbody protection kit is perhaps the best way to ensure this never happens.
Accessories
While you might not be using them during your on-road adventures, if you have a roof rack or any grille upgrades fitted, you must make sure they are secure. Also, ensure that any additional in-cab accessories, such as rear-view cameras and extra gauges and panels, are secure and operational.
Brakes and suspension
You should check the shock absorbers for leaks or damage, as well as the overall condition of the springs and spring mounts. If there are any cracks or leaks then it might be time to replace your stock suspension.
Wheels and axles
Inspect the axles for oil leaks. As for the tyres themselves, check the pressure (at your local garage if necessary) and examine the treads for wear and tear.
Windows and lights
Glass can crack, particularly if you’ve been hitting the trails quite aggressively. So, check your windows, windshield and all light lenses for cracks. Also, test all of your lights (turn signals, hazards, headlights, stop lights and reverse lights) to ensure there are no bulbs out.
Finally, always do a last-minute inspection before sending your pride and joy off to be judged. If you manage to follow the tips above and are not above replacing and repairing the things that need replacing and repairing then you should get many years out of even the oldest of 4×4 rigs. As with anything in life, they will last longer and bring you more joy if you look after them. And that’s true regardless of an MOT.
