Sometimes you don’t need a lot to make a big impression. Look at the prolonged success of the humble Mini for proof. Of course, you might understandably assume that the idea of a small 4×4 would be something of an anathema. However, just because something is powerful that doesn’t mean it has to be an imposing beast.

To underline the fact, we’ve put together a list of the smallest off-road vehicles that still pack a punch when it comes to style, drivability and desirability.

The Suzuki SJ-series

When you mention the phrase “baby 4×4” the first thing that probably comes to mind is the Suzuki Samurai. This ubiquitous vehicle seemed to pop up everywhere in the 80s and 90s with its boxy design and subtle 1.3-litre engine. Very much a car of its time but it is still guaranteed to turn heads to this day.

The Fiat Panda Sisley

The most striking thing about the Fiat Panda Sisley is that it doesn’t look like a 4×4 at all. If you didn’t know any better you’d probably assume it was a bit of a wimp. There is something innately charming about this model though and as it’s so ridiculously small it’s incredibly easy to drive. The archetypal beginner’s off-roader.

The Mitsubishi Delica

This is a funny one. The almost completely rectangular construction of the Delica gave it the unenviable reputation of being a “box on wheels.” But if you can look past the shape, the design is quite practical and under the hood, you’re basically driving a Shogun.

The Dacia Duster

The Duster is one of the most affordable 4x4s on the market and is surprisingly robust given its low cost. It’s probably going to need some decent upgrades and the right tyres if you’re going to give it a serious run for its money but as an entry-level modern off-road vehicle, this is about as good as it gets.

The VW Golf Cross Country

The Golf series has always been renowned for offering great practicality and performance for a decent price and the same could be said of the range’s 4×4 entry. The cross country is essentially an Mk2 Golf raised off the ground and given bull bars and full 4WD but the Mk2 Golf is a great car so who’s arguing?

The Land Rover Lightweight

While you’re unlikely to see this one on the road anytime soon (it was originally commissioned for military use) there is something quite strange and wonderful about seeing such an iconic vehicle stripped of all its bells and whistles. It’s a pretty barebones ride but it’s incredibly cute!

The Sherp

Finally, let’s go a little further outside the box. Presenting to you the Sherp – a Russian ATV that is more wheel than car. It’s an amphibious, all-terrain vehicle that looks like something from a video game and we absolutely love it. If you ever needed a 4×4 that could drive you up the side of Everest, this would be the one!
