When undertaking any journey, whether long or short, safety should always come first. That’s why it’s vital to complete a range of vehicle checks before you hit the road, and the same applies when travelling off-road too.

Read on to discover the checks to make before you leave for your off-road trip and look forward to an epic adventure that’s safe as well as exhilarating.

Do you have the means to inflate your tyres?

As the components that keep you connected to the road, your tyres need special care and attention to ensure they are safe and ready for off-roading. This is especially true if you plan to air down during your off-road trip.

There are many reasons why you’d consider airing down the tyres of your 4×4 vehicle. The reduced tyre pressure can help you negotiate any terrain with ease. The increased contact with the ground also boosts traction and stability, while reducing strain and trail impact. What goes down however, must go back up!

Make sure you have the necessary equipment to inflate and deflate. Like Take the Truck, we’d recommend on-board air compressors rather than portable ones:

“On-board air compressors are hardwired into your vehicle’s electrical system and controlled with a switch inside your vehicle. They allow a faster and more convenient access to compressed air for returning your tyres to street pressure after airing down. They can also be used to operate air-locking differentials if you happen to upgrade your 4×4 vehicle to ARB Airlockers down the road to improve off-road performance.”

Do you have enough fuel?

Fuel is another necessity that you just can’t be without on the open road. While your fuel needs will be dictated by the length of your trip, the itinerary and the amenities along the way, loading up on fuel never hurts.

In addition to filling your tank, carrying extra courtesy of an additional fuel tank is recommended for longer or more remote journeys. Long or extended range fuel tanks offer a safe and convenient method for carrying more fuel in your vehicle. Many of these tanks are also vehicle-specific to ensure seamless integration and a sturdy 4×4 accessory you can rely on.

What about other fluids and filters?

The generic filter and fluid checks you’d complete before a long journey in your usual runaround also shouldn’t be skipped. Check your coolant, oil, washer fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid, ATF and differentials, as well as the charge of your 4×4’s battery.

Are all the fasteners on your accessories working?

Those accessories need checking too, especially the fasteners that secure them to your wider vehicle or its storage solutions. Make sure fasteners and any other key components are in good working order to ensure your journey can continue without a hitch, or any lost supplies!

Is your winch off-road trip ready?

The importance of vehicle maintenance should never be underestimated, and this applies to the gear you carry onboard too. Accessories like your vehicle’s winch need regular maintenance to ensure the condition that guarantees safe operation.

Your winch should be cleaned, checked for dirt and damage, and lubricated on a bi-monthly basis. It also needs to be used frequently – at least once a month – to prevent corrosion and preserve performance. Test before you depart on your off-road trip too, spooling out your winch fully prior to setting off.
