Some things really do get better with age, but usually cars aren’t one of them! With the right care and a few carefully selected upgrades however, the most iconic vehicle makes and models can stand the test of time.

With the cost of used vehicles remaining high, investing in a classic for future resale is a great idea with the right model appreciating in value as The Car Investor explains:

“Whilst most cars will depreciate in value, classic cars often appreciate. To gain value, a car needs to possess a quality that makes it interesting to collectors. Collectors will pay top dollar for the rarest models, so it’s important to establish how rare the car is before investing. Investors will often look out for limited edition cars, the heritage of the brand, performance, and those with links to motorsport when making their decisions on which car to buy.”

Collectors don’t just pay a premium for classic cars. The market for classic 4x4s is just as well established, and those looking to invest should buy the following makes and models right now!

Land Cruiser 40 Series

The Toyota Land Cruiser is no doubt a legend on the 4×4 scene. The story of this much loved off-roader goes back some 75 years, with the first Land Cruisers used as mobility vehicles for the Japanese National Police Reserve before being modified and produced for public sale. It should therefore come as no surprise that this is a desirable vehicle on the classic 4×4 scene.

If you wanted to invest in any Land Cruiser, make it the 40 series. Manufactured from 1960 to 1984, the Land Cruiser 40 Series was well known for its off-road capabilities and reliability. In fact, in its heyday, it often outsold the Land Rover in many countries.

These days, with parts for the Land Cruiser 40 Series scarce and fewer drivable models available for sale, it makes an enviable investment that promises fantastic returns.

Nissan Patrol 160 and 260

Hailing from the 1980s and 1990s, the Nissan Patrol 160 and 260 may boast more modern technology when compared to the Land Cruiser 40 Series, but it is just as sought after. The 160 Series was particularly innovative during its time, and was accessible in several styles – including 3-door, 5-door, 3-door soft top, pickup truck and even safari fire truck!

The Nissan Patrol 160 and 260 models for sale today are rare finds, especially in good condition. With the right upgrades and expertise however, they can be completely restored, bringing to life one of the strongest drivetrains and most versatile 4WD models of the era.

Land Rover Series I, II and III

We couldn’t provide a rundown of the best classic 4x4s without including Land Rover Series I, II and III. These vehicles are icons, and while the Land Rover Series I started it all, Series II and III models make great investments too.

Put into production in 1948, the Series I was the only Land Rover available and ever needed for some time. It was a reimagining of engineer Maurice Wilks’ ex-US Army Jeep, and developed specifically for life on his Anglesey farm.

Following this initial, simple yet effective build, the Land Rover continued to evolve, with the Tickford-bodied Station Wagon launched a year later, and a longer pickup and more utilitarian station wagon (this time with bolt-together bodywork) following. The Land Rover Series II made its debut in 1958, while the Series III arrived much later – in 1971 to be exact.

Land Rover Defender

Another Land Rover classic that deserves your attention is the Defender. What started life as a vehicle built using several hand-me-down components – including a Jeep chassis and engines borrowed from other Land Rover models – quickly became a standout star in its own right. It was officially launched in the 1990s and has since been envied throughout the 4WD market.

We stock parts and accessories for several old school pickups and 4x4s, including the classics mentioned above. Browse our range of upgrades today to find the add-ons you need to make your vehicle an even better investment.
