Of all the great green laning and off-roading locations in the UK, few are as contentious as the Lake District. In recent years, locals and committed ramblers alike have attempted to get the use of 4×4 vehicles on off-road tracks in the region banned. They complained that it not only polluted the national parks but also endangered cyclists and ramblers. However, the case was overturned when it was discovered that those who were complaining had contributed just as much to the pollution of the area as the green laners and the Lake District remains a 4×4 hotspot as a result.
The best thing about 4×4 driving in Cumbria and the Lake District, however, is that you don’t even need to own your own suitable vehicle! Such is the reputation of the area that dozens of outfits have set up off-road experience days suitable for all ages and all experience levels. So here, we’ll be taking you through a few of the very best.
Mud Mayhem at Kendal
This course takes part in over 300 acres of countryside and looks out over some of the Lake District’s most picturesque views. Created to offer a challenge to even seasoned drivers, the course includes everything from pools of mud to slippery slopes and bespoke obstacles. It’s also very affordable, with experiences starting from just a shade over £30.
Graythwaite Adventure
Situated on a private estate overlooking the famous Lake Windermere, this course is billed as the “Lake District’s only purpose-built off-road course with one-to-one instruction.” This means it’s ideal for first-timers. Each participant will be given access to a Land Rover Defender and boasts that it avoids green lanes entirely for a completely environmentally sustainable experience.
Rookin House
Not only a great location for 4×4 enthusiasts but quad bikers and mountain bikers too, the spectacular scenery at this top-rated tourist attraction would be reason enough to pay a visit but Rookin House also offers off-roading in a Dakar 4×4 kit car on private farmland overlooked by the majestic Blencathra fell. You can also try a reverse steer challenge, video navigation, or take a thrilling ride in an amphibious Argo Cat. Great fun for all the family.
Kankku Off-Road Driving Adventures
For those who long for the authentic off-road experience, it doesn’t get much better than this. You can hire a specialist vehicle or bring your own to this Overlanding adventure and the combination of easy and technical tracks mean everyone will find something to test their mettle.
Doing it yourself
Several legal green lane routes allow public vehicle access and you can access maps detailing these routes from Cumbria County Council’s website. You must stick to these routes and should also avoid damaging the route with your vehicle, if possible. For this reason, we would only recommend ‘doing it yourself’ if you are an experienced 4×4 driver. If not, either of the options listed above will give you all the thrill of the off-roading experience without any of the danger.
