A regular in the rundowns of best pickup trucks, the Ford Ranger’s generous cargo bay, plush interior and overall driving experience certainly impresses. It’s a pickup truck that scores highly when it comes to driving and practicality, with those looking for thrills and functionality for work or play never disappointed. The PX Series is particularly notable.
Brought to the market in 2011, the original Ford Ranger PX certainly caused a stir. Ford has since released additional incarnations – namely the PX2 and PX3 – to capitalise on this success.
If you’re in the market for a Ford Ranger however, determining the differences between the PX1, PX2 and PX3 is a great place to begin. In this blog post, we help you do just that so you can find the Ranger that is right for you.
The original PX
While the PX1, PX2 and PX3 are all Ford Ranger T6 models, the PX1 is what started it all. Manufactured between 2011 and 2015, its impressive load carrying capacity, towing capabilities and off-road agility quickly gained the now iconic model a legion of fans. As a result, the PX1 became Europe’s best selling pickup truck in no time at all.
The next gen PX2
When the PX2 made its debut in 2015, the differences were for all to see. When compared to the PX1, the PX2 sported slicker, more aggressive styling, with the front grille dramatically different. Its fog lights also boasted a new and improved design.
While the differences between the PX1 and PX2 were largely visual, there was one addition that really stood out to those familiar with the PX Series as Drive explains:
“Compared to the PX1, the PX2 is largely the same. The driveline, engine and drivability are the same, aside from the electronically-assisted steering in the later model PX2. The upgraded infotainment in the PX2 is a welcome change. The colour touchscreen makes life a lot easier, and the LCD screens flanking the speedo on the dash make displaying information a breeze.”
The Ford Ranger PX2 continued to be manufactured until 2019, and delighted Ranger enthusiasts throughout this period.
The new and improved PX3
The Ford Ranger PX3 was introduced in 2019, and once more the Ranger received a facelift.
The front grille is the main visual difference between the PX3 and PX2, with the latest model building on the aggressive, muscular styling that the PX2 became known and loved for. New headlights and a redesigned tailgate cemented the evolution of the Ford Ranger for a new generation.
Under the hood, the Ford Ranger PX3 enjoyed further improvements. The front suspension was revised, transforming the T6’s very basic stock suspension and its hampered performance both on and off road.
