Whether you use your pickup truck for work or your 4×4 to explore the world’s best off-roading hotspots, being prepared for anything is important. With the start of a new season just on the horizon, you’ll be faced with a brand-new set of challenges as a 4×4 or pickup driver…
According to this research, a quarter of weather-related traffic accidents are the result of snowy, slushy or icy road conditions, with December the worst month for traffic fatalities. One very simple ingredient however could guarantee safety when driving this winter as OUTCO explains:
“Every year the UK spreads millions of tonnes of winter gritting salt on our roads, pavements and car parks to battle the icy conditions of a UK winter. But why do we use winter gritting salt? Winter surfaces covered by ice can cause many problems, from a simple slip to a major incident. To ensure people are kept safe and sites remain operational, surfaces need to be de-iced, and this is usually done by distributing winter gritting salt onto the surface.”
The Meyer Blaster Tailgate Spreader is one of the newest additions to our 4×4 upgrades range and a real lifesaver during the winter months. With the Meyer salt spreader, you can prepare for the worst of the winter weather, and keep your outdoor surfaces safe and ready for use.
As well as being a premium piece of kit, this contractor quality, free-flowing tailgate spreader is designed for mounting to several larger 4×4 vehicles. You’ll be pleased to hear that installing your Meyer spreader is simple too, just follow these steps…
Prepare your vehicle
Your vehicle should have a 2-inch or 50mm rear receiver hitch fitted to ensure safe and secure mounting.

Check your kit
Our Meyer Blaster kits provide all required parts as standard, including the hopper cover and controller.
After checking that your vehicle is eligible for the spreader, considering the spreader’s size and your vehicle’s capacity, remove the unit and all loose parts from their packaging, locating the large hitch pin and cotter clip first.
Inspect the receiver tube
Now it’s time to inspect your vehicle’s receiver tube. Check for rust, dirt or foreign debris during inspection, and clear any blockages with compressed air and a wire brush.
Next, apply good quality grease to the inside of the tube. The grease will protect the receiver tube from rusting and subsequent corrosion, issues that can make the spreader more difficult to remove once the season comes to an end.
Mount your unit
After preparing your receiver tube, locate the SS bolts already preinstalled in the mounting holes of the framework. Apply light oil to the threads of the bolts, and use the provided SS locknuts and SS flat washers to secure the hitch assembly.
Once the nuts and washers are tightened, lift the spreader unit upright, making sure the hopper opening is facing up and the mounting tube is directed towards your vehicle. Slide the mounting tube into the receiver and insert the large hitch pin before securing with the cotter clip.
Add the cover
Add the cover to the hopper, and secure with clamps on both sides. Finish by using the ratchet tie down strap and tie down hooks to tie the spreader to your vehicle’s frame. This will eliminate rocking when the spreader is in use.
