Arguably the peak version of an already established model, the Mitsubishi L200 Series 5 (also known as the L200 MQ or simply the 2015-19 model) offers perhaps one of the best value-for-money propositions in the world of 4×4. It’s an attractive and affordable 4×4 pickup with an incredibly responsive engine that offers a nimble driving experience right out of the box both on-road and off-road.
But it’s also a ride that is always going to benefit from some after-market upgrades. So, with that in mind, here are the first five upgrades (not necessarily the last, of course) that we’d recommend for your Mitsubishi L200 Series 5.
1. EVC throttle controller
While the stock throttle response of the L200 Series 5 is certainly nothing to scoff at, the EVC throttle controller is perhaps the most affordable and easy-to-install upgrade you can make to your vehicle that will offer immediate and noticeable results. It plugs into your existing throttle and allows you to more accurately tune how responsive it is, giving you more options when it comes to how you tackle off-road hurdles.
2. Heavy-duty clutch
The Series 5 is a vehicle that is often used by owners as a tow truck and when you’re going to be towing heavy equipment, you’re going to need a sturdy clutch. The stock clutch is fine for general driving, but if you’re going to be doing any towing with your L200 then a heavy-duty clutch upgrade such as the Xtreme Outback kit should do the trick.
3. Suspension kit
Whether you want to boost your ride height to fit larger wheels and tyres or increase ground clearance on and off the road, a suspension kit is the best way to get it done. While the L200 is a nimble beast, it could be perceived as being a little underpowered when it comes to more serious off-road challenges. Install an OME suspension lift kit in your rig, however, and there are very few off-road obstacles you won’t be able to overcome.
4. Underbody protection
If you’re going to be doing even a small amount of off-roading in your Series 5 then you’re going to want to add a little extra protection to the underside of your vehicle. That’s where all the important stuff lives, after all. The underbody protection offered by a skid plate attaches comfortably to the bottom of your vehicle and acts as a barrier between the most vital components of your drivetrain and the stones and debris you’ll be kicking up while you’re tearing up the green lanes.
5. EGR Load Shield
A 4×4 pickup truck can be an incredibly convenient vehicle to have in your garage but that exposed rear truck bed can also cause problems for some owners. The truck bed in the L200 Series 5 is particularly large, which is why you might want to consider a secure cover for it. Enter the aluminium shield by EGR, which can be installed easily and removed in seconds if needed.
