As 4WD upgrade specialists, we also cater to older pickup models. In this blog post, we reveal just some of the old-school favourites we provide upgrades for and the top enhancements that’ll officially bring them into the 21st century.
The Mitsubishi L200 Series 3 K74 1996-06
Known for its mechanical simplicity, surprisingly civilised engine, robust nature and, of course, that iconic squared-off appearance, the Mitsubishi L200 Series 3 K74 1996-06 is a favourite for so many reasons.
They say with age comes experience, but the driving experience offered by the K74 leaves a lot to be desired as Parkers details:
“There is a good degree of body roll in faster bends, and the 137hp engine often causes the rear wheels to spin momentarily when accelerating out of junctions in normal driving mode. The L200 is a strong performer off-road with a low-range gearbox, good ground clearance and excellent axle articulation. Like many part-time four-wheel drive vehicles, the L200 must run in two-wheel drive mode on normal dry roads though to prevent transmission damage.”
You can fine-tune this old-school setup to boost the positives associated with the L200 Series 3 and minimise the negatives by checking out our upgrade recommendations below.
The Toyota Hilux pre-2005
The Hilux story didn’t begin with the Series 7 (2004-15) or Series 8 (2015-on). Toyota has a long history of creating pickups, in fact, the Japanese carmaker recently celebrated 50 years of the Hilux.
The very first Hilux went into production in 1968, with its debut, short-wheelbase, 1.5-litre petrol model only accessible in two-wheel drive and single cab. These earlier models were a far cry from the supercharged Hilux available in recent years.
We stock upgrades for several pre-2005 Hilux models, including the Series 3 (1979-83), Series 4 (1983-88), Series 5 (1988-97) and Series 6 (1997-05) pickups. Read on to discover our top upgrade recommendations.
The Nissan Navara D22 pre-2005
Alongside upgrades for the Nissan Navara D40 (2004-15) and D23 (2015-22), you’ll find enhancements for the pre-2005 D22 vehicles. Known widely as the ‘global pickup’, this reliable and versatile vehicle has been the subject of many updates and improvements over the years.
The Navara first came onto the scene in 1985 and has since become one of the most popular pickup trucks on the planet. You’ll find our upgrade recommendations for pickups like the Navara D22 at the end of this post.
The Ford Ranger pre-2011
Another world-famous pickup still making its mark today is the Ford Ranger. The first-generation Ranger debuted in 1983 and replaced the Mazda-produced Ford Courier. It was the first compact pickup to be designed and produced by Ford.
A decade later, the Ranger received a major redesign, whilst a minor update to its third generation (1998-12) saw its status cemented throughout the 4WD world. Looking for the top upgrades for your Ford Ranger pre-2011? Read on to find out more.
