Overlanding is an expensive hobby in many respects, with the initial outlay of a suitable 4×4 vehicle and additional upgrades all adding up. But the freedom and adventure that overlanding offers are well worth the time and money enthusiasts invest.

An expedition or overlanding truck is after all so much more than a vehicle. It’s an all-weather, off-road, off-grid base on wheels that gives you prime access to the great outdoors at its very best. Getting into overlanding unlocks a series of fantastic prospects, with those early days providing an amazing opportunity to plan and build an overland truck to your exact specifications.

When planning and building an overland truck however many people make the very costly error of buying their wheels and tyres first only to find they won’t fit, leaving them spending yet more funds on sourcing the right suspension kit to fix the issue.

Make sure you start your overlanding adventure off on the right foot with our guide to planning and building your custom truck the right way.

Add any significant weight

When preparing for your very first overlanding adventure, you may be shocked to discover just how many supplies you need to take on your trip with confidence. Hi-lift jacks, tow straps, winch kits and spare tyres are just some of the essentials that make it onto the overlanding checklist, and that’s before you begin packing all the food, water, kitchen supplies, toiletries and clothing you need for surviving life off the beaten track.

By considering the amount (and weight) of your supplies early, you can equip your vehicle with your storage requirements in mind and save time, money and lots of hassle in the long run as Mowgli Adventures details:

“The heavier the load you’re carrying, the more the fuel mileage will be affected. This will also limit your speed as well. Key components are strained to a greater degree; half shafts break more often and clutches wear more quickly. Handling becomes less predictable and makes the vehicle less capable off-road. Think about your overall weight when considering any modification.”

Everyone should start their overland truck builds by adding any significant weight like steel bumpers, winches, roof racks, roof tents, and storage units (such as ARB modular drawer systems) first.

Order the correct suspension

Now that the weight of your overland vehicle is becoming more apparent, it’s time to order your suspension kit. Your suspension kit should suit the weight of your overland truck and those added extras to give the amount of lift you need to enjoy optimum safety, access to the supplies required, and a comfortable ride.

It is vital that the spring rate of your overland truck is just right. We stock a broad range of suspension kits, lifts and upgrades for varying vehicle makes, models, and series meaning you can achieve just that. As suspension experts, we’re here to support you so feel free to ask us for advice!

Buy wheels and tyres last

The final step in your overland truck build is to choose and add the right wheels and tyres. Whilst we don’t stock wheels and tyres here at 4×4 Works, adding weight and choosing the right suspension kit first will certainly stand you in good stead for making the right decision on these vital components.

With the right wheels and tyres, you can prevent a long list of overlanding issues, including tyres scrubbing against the vehicle frame or components.
