Filter byARB was established in Australia in 1975 by Tony Brown. Tony was a keen overlander and had seen how many of the low-quality 4WD accessories in the market – particularly roof racks and bull bars – would break and fail in use due to the harsh conditions and punishing terrain they were being used in.
Early production focused on high quality fabricated products, which were formed, welded and coated in Tony’s garage in Melbourne. By the late 1970’s, ARB had become a registered business, and moved into their first factory. The company has always focused on offering high quality and durable products, aimed at serious explorers and commercial users.
In the 1970s, the Australian 4×4 market focused heavily on Land Rovers and most upgrades were home made to meet each user’s specific needs. However, as the 70’s drew to a close, more and more American and Japanese brands and models entered the Australian market – with the likes of the Toyota Hilux and Land Cruiser sitting alongside Isuzu, Holden and Ford.
This boom in imported vehicles, and the subsequent development of factories set up by Toyota, GM and Ford within Australia, saw the Australian vehicle market become more and more diversified. ARB were quick to meet the demand for these new vehicles with an ever expanding product range, including front and rear bumpers, side protection, rescue and recovery gear.
A big change came in 1988 when ARB acquired a small but very highly regarded suspension business called Old Man Emu. Although at the time OME had a small product range, it had become the brand of choice for serious users and ARB set about improving production facilities and developing a larger range to suit many off-road vehicles.
Whilst focusing on Old Man Emu, ARB also continued to build their own product portfolio. ARB had become Australia’s largest and best-known 4WD brand, and they took the brand to another level by establishing two large distribution facilities in the USA. The Jeep market had become a significant area of growth worldwide and ARB had started offering bumpers, racks, suspension and other products for the Wrangler YJ and Cherokee XJ models.
Throughout the 1990’s, ARB became more and more recognised around the world – and established a presence in new markets such as the United Kingdom, France and Germany. New products were constantly coming to market, all being developed in Australia under the watchful gaze of the Brown family. The new range included underbody protection, rated recovery points, load barriers, survival gear and specialist suspension products and innovations.
The following years saw ARB build production and distribution facilities in Europe and Thailand, continuing to meet the global market growth. Products such as LED lighting, roof tents, drawer systems, fuel tanks and ABS canopies were developed and successfully marketed and the company went public, listing on the Australian stock market.
As the world leader in 4WD and off-road products, ARB and the brands they partner with offer a complete, high quality range of 4×4 upgrades and accessories. With dozens of flagship stores across Australia and New Zealand and retail presence in over 80 countries, ARB products can be seen everywhere in the 4WD and off-road market.
4×4 Works are the largest and most experienced ARB reseller in the UK, with the largest stock-holding and the most in-depth knowledge of the product range.
