Dometic is a world leader in outdoor products and cooling. Their history can be traced back well over 100 years, to the formation of Electrolux in Stockholm, Sweden in 1904. The Electrolux brand was and still is a household name across Europe and beyond, and in 1960 the company spun off the leisure division of the company and created Dometic Corporation.

The 1960s saw significant growth in a new and novel automotive sector: recreational use. Slowly, the adventurous folk of Europe and America were starting to use their vehicles for adventure, recreation and leisure – and both vehicle manufacturers and the aftermarket were sitting up and taking notice.

Due to their enviable reputation in the home appliance market, Electrolux and the newly-formed Dometic were asked to design and develop an increasing range of products for touring and travel. In the years that followed, this range grew from caravan fridges to cookers, sinks, freezers, kitchen equipment and a plethora of other items.

Many brand acquisitions have followed, including Waeco (once a popular brand of marine and motorhome fridges but now focused on AC servicing equipment for garages), CADAC, Kampa, Front Runner, SeaStar and others.

Dometic

The Dometic name and their distinctive black and white logo are now to be found on literally thousands of products, but in the 4WD world a special mention should go out to the Dometic ranges of fridges, freezers and coolers. The CFX3 range combines refrigeration and freezer tech into a portable and low-consumption product family with market-leading build quality and a range of useful upgrades including fridge slides and covers. Other cooler ranges include the CFF, TCX and CK product groups.

With so much expertise in cooling, it is no surprise that Dometic are the market leaders in camper, caravan, motorhome and marine air conditioning. Product ranges including the FreshJet and FreshWell families offer efficient cooling and comfort to users across the globe and a huge number of builders and manufacturers choose to fit Dometic cooling products to new vehicles.

Recent years have seen an increasing focus on the van life market, and new brands such as Front Runner and CADAC bring roof racks, storage solutions and cooking products to the Dometic stable. In 2018, Dometic made one of their largest acquisitions with the purchase of Kampa for £50 million. Kampa are one of the UK’s best known tent and camping brands and their products are highly respected by serious camping enthusiasts.

Both Dometic and Kampa offer ranges of inflatable tents and more recently, Dometic have launched both electrically operated and inflatable roof tents. These roof tents are some of the easiest and most convenient roof top camping products on the market and are testament to Dometic’s continued efforts to innovate and impress the industry and their many customers.
