Eberspächer was founded in 1865 in Esslingen am Neckar, Germany, by Jakob Eberspächer. Having worked for a number of years as a master tinsmith, Eberspächer established his own workshop and initially focused on producing metal-framed roof glazing.

Between 1865 and Jakob’s death in 1899, the company grew considerably, and other family members took senior positions within the business, including Eberspächer’s son Adolf and his wife Friederike. After having hand-built products including roofs for railway stations and airship hangars for more than thirty years, the company invested heavily in electrically powered machinery in 1900 and increased their staff to 80 employees.

By 1928, the company was producing glazing and metal framework for some of the largest structures in Germany and beyond, including Milan railway station. To meet demand, subsidiaries were established in Austria, Czech Republic, Poland and Italy.

A significant turning point came for the company in 1931 when the first automotive parts were produced. Eberspächer started production of a range of exhaust systems for passenger cars, which were hugely successful, and by 1933 the company progressed on to the development of vehicle heating systems, which were a new and novel product at the time.

The 1930s saw the company’s growth continue, with new offices and factory development in Esslingen seeing the workforce grow to more than 700 employees. During World War II, Eberspächer was integrated into the armaments industry and aircraft parts were produced up until 1945.

Post-war Germany saw demand for a diverse range of products, from metal cases and portable cookers to artificial limbs and turbochargers. Innovation continued within the company, and by 1953 a new automotive product was launched – the pre-heater. This product addressed issues caused by operating vehicles in cold climates and made for easier engine starting, reduced component wear and improved passenger comfort. Exhaust system production continued at a pace, with the one millionth exhaust muffler being manufactured in Esslingen in 1954.

1975 saw another technical breakthrough in the vehicle heating sector, with the now legendary B1L heater coming to market. This was the first heater which could be fitted directly into the passenger compartment of a vehicle, and it found its way into cars, vans, campers and motorhomes, lorries and buses. Over the following years, the company developed and successfully marketed a range of electric heaters which are found in motorhomes, buses and lorries around the world.

Continued growth has seen the company establishing factories and development facilities in the USA, Canada, France, Portugal, Romania, the UK, Brazil, Poland, South Africa and the Czech Republic. With over 10,000 staff and world-class development and testing facilities, Eberspächer have been able to remain at the forefront of the market for exhaust systems, air heating and air conditioning, fuel cell technology, defence, and far more besides.
