Filter byKaymar was founded in 1963 by the Jackson family in Victoria, Australia. The family had purchased one of the first Land Cruiser FJ55 models to arrive in Australia and they were keen to accessorise it so that it could better cope with the terrain encountered in the Victoria high country. This part of Australia is well known for putting the capabilities of 4×4 vehicles to the test, and Jackson set out to build some strong and durable vehicle protection in his home workshop.
Jackson was a highly skilled fabricator, and as soon as he had completed his rig and started to use it, his friends and neighbours approached him one by one and asked him to make them something similar for their own 4WDs and trucks. Before long, Kaymar was born.
Whilst Kaymar may not have been the first company to build replacement 4WD bumpers, there were relatively few vehicle protection options available in 1960’s Australia and none were very durable. It was customary for handy 4WD owners to grab a welder and a pile of scrap tube and to simply fabricate whatever they needed, but most home builders would create products which were rudimentary at best and these products were prone to twisting and breaking on the trail. Kaymar, however, set their sights on the top end of the market and from 1963 up to the present day, the company has only produced the most durable protection systems available.
The story of Kaymar is not another rags-to-riches tale, with huge factories across the country and hundreds of staff. Kaymar have always produced specialist products, with applications ranging from overland travel to mining, farming, remote area rescue and law enforcement. The current range includes popular vehicle models such as the Land Cruiser, Hilux, Ranger, Patrol, Land Rover and FJ Cruiser.
The most recognisable Kaymar product would be the Rear Bar with twin wheel carriers; a heavily-built rear bumper with a tow hitch and two hinged spare wheel carriers. In fact, with the exception of their small accessory range, Kaymar only offer rear bumpers and carriers – preferring to leave frontal and side protection products to other market players.
Options available include single or twin jerry can holders, 2” tongue hitches, jack holders and lighting. Outside of Australia, there are few importers of Kaymar products and their sheer weight makes them cumbersome and expensive to move around the world. Still, if you ever find yourself in a position where only the best rear protection will do, Kaymar will probably be the first brand on your list and perhaps your only option.
