Filter byLong Range Automotive (LRA) was founded in Lilydale, Victoria, Australia, in 1989 by brothers Anthony and Roger Beimers. After having qualified and worked as a boiler maker for several years, Anthony approached his brother with a business idea. Roger had qualified as a panel beater, so both men had steel working experience and a shared desire to forge their own path in the fast-growing Australian 4WD industry.
With an eye for design and an interest in product engineering and development, Anthony worked behind the scenes to develop designs for extended range petrol and diesel tanks. This necessitated borrowing or acquiring all the latest 4WD vehicle models, dismantling and measuring them, fabricating prototype tanks and test-fitting them. Consideration had to be made for different model variations, and Anthony prided himself on achieving the best balance between maximising tank capacity whilst maintaining ground clearance and departure angles.
Meanwhile, Roger became the face of the business, running both the offices and workshop. From early on, Roger was keen to be able to offer a fitting service for Long Range Automotive and many customers were happy to drive long distances to Lilydale to ensure correct fitment of their new tanks.
LRA have maintained their presence in Lilydale, with a 12,000 sq ft facility housing their product development, manufacturing, offices and workshop. As a brand, LRA are often found at trade shows across Australia and their products are sold in many countries worldwide.
There are several ways to increase fuel capacity in a 4WD vehicle. Traditionally, jerry cans of diesel would be carried either on the roof or inside the vehicle – but this is inconvenient, prone to theft, and tends to either increase vehicle height or make the interior smell of fuel. A much better solution is to replace your main fuel tank with an extended range petrol or diesel tank. Some vehicle models are manufactured with auxiliary or sub tanks, and in many cases these can be upgraded to allow for larger tanks and increased capacity. Another means of increasing fuel capacity is to add a sub tank to models which do not already have one – and LRA offer a range of sub and auxiliary tanks for many models.
When travelling in remote locations, maximising fuel capacity of paramount. Obviously the first benefit would be to increase vehicle range to enable longer trips, but there are other reasons. In many parts of the world, fuel quality can be poor and a larger capacity means more choice in where the vehicle is refuelled. Cost can vary greatly from one country to another, and increased capacity can therefore represent a significant cost saving.
