In 1993, Osram Sylvania was established in north America when Osram acquired Sylvania lighting from the American General Telephone & Electronics Corporation (GTE). This gave Osram access to a huge market share in the USA, including domestic, commercial and automobile sectors, along with patents, manufacturing facilities, and some of the most skilled engineers in the industry worldwide. From the 1990s onwards, Osram would focus more of their efforts on the premium automobile market, producing spot lights and eventually light bars for car, van and 4WD customers.
Osram is still a household name in the domestic lighting world, and their products can be found in DIY stores in every UK town and city. As a brand, they are known for producing reliable and durable bulbs, and as the incandescent light bulb has been retired in the UK in the last decade, Osram have turned their factories to the production of low energy domestic light bulbs and tubes.
Perhaps Osram has traditionally not been a name which 4×4 users would associate with premium LED light bars and fog lights, but Osram have worked for more than 30 years as an OEM manufacturer, producing the incandescent bulbs, LED filaments, wiring looms and even the complete light bars and spots which adorn millions of cars, vans and lorries around the world. Traditionally, Osram has acted as a manufacturer, delivering premium products which then wear the name and branding of other companies.
Recently, due to changes within the company, Osram products can now be found in the 4WD market, bearing the legendary name which we all know. The Osram name is still synonymous with quality and durability, and their products are built to last – whatever conditions they are used in.
