The origins of the Osram name can be traced back to 1906, when German scientist Carl Auer von Welsbach developed the first incandescent light bulb: the Osram Incandescent Lamp. Von Welsbach worked for German electronics manufacturer Deutsche Gasglühlicht-Anstalt, and his new invention was, of course, wildly successful.

British manufacturer The General Electric Company (GEC) started importing large quantities of Osram filaments to the UK to enable production of their own incandescent lamps, and by 1919, Auergesellschaft, Siemens & Halske and Allgemeine Elektrizitäts-Gesellschaft (AEG) combined their electric lamp production capabilities to form Osram as a company.

Production of Osram products continued to develop around the world, and by the 1920’s, Osram was recognised in every corner of the globe where electric lighting was available – from Europe to the Americas and from Asia to Africa.

The automobile was growing in popularity worldwide, and Osram were at the forefront of supplying lighting products to this market. Early automobiles often sported paraffin lamps, and the reliability and convenience of having incandescent bulbs made for easier and safer night-time travel.

In 1993, Osram Sylvania was established in north America when Osram acquired Sylvania lighting from the American General Telephone & Electronics Corporation (GTE). This gave Osram access to a huge market share in the USA, including domestic, commercial and automobile sectors, along with patents, manufacturing facilities, and some of the most skilled engineers in the industry worldwide. From the 1990s onwards, Osram would focus more of their efforts on the premium automobile market, producing spot lights and eventually light bars for car, van and 4WD customers.

Osram is still a household name in the domestic lighting world, and their products can be found in DIY stores in every UK town and city. As a brand, they are known for producing reliable and durable bulbs, and as the incandescent light bulb has been retired in the UK in the last decade, Osram have turned their factories to the production of low energy domestic light bulbs and tubes.

Perhaps Osram has traditionally not been a name which 4×4 users would associate with premium LED light bars and fog lights, but Osram have worked for more than 30 years as an OEM manufacturer, producing the incandescent bulbs, LED filaments, wiring looms and even the complete light bars and spots which adorn millions of cars, vans and lorries around the world. Traditionally, Osram has acted as a manufacturer, delivering premium products which then wear the name and branding of other companies.

Recently, due to changes within the company, Osram products can now be found in the 4WD market, bearing the legendary name which we all know. The Osram name is still synonymous with quality and durability, and their products are built to last – whatever conditions they are used in.

4×4 Works are proud to be Osram’s official UK partner and stockist, with an ever growing range of lighting products. We think you will be impressed by the high quality of Osram spots, light pods, light bars and work lights, with their industry leading features, wide accessory range and long manufacturer warranties.
