Pedders was established in 1950 in Carnegie, Australia, by Roy Pedder. At first, the business was called Pedders Die-Cast Welding Service, and they specialised in repairing household appliances. Pedder was a highly experienced World War II fighter plane welder, with specialist skills in welding die-cast materials, and he soon turned his hand to the automotive industry, specialising in accident repairs and building shock absorbers.

In the 1950s, vehicles such as Land Rovers were finding their way into the Australian market – but the market had not yet caught up with Australian conditions in terms of spare parts. Unlike the UK and European conditions which the vehicles were designed for, Australia presents its own set of challenges – corrugated tracks, gravel roads, extreme heat, dust, and remote locations with no possibility of finding spare parts or repair facilities.

In his workshop, Pedder set about repairing and rebuilding the lever shock absorbers which were common at the time, and the business grew quickly. By the late 1950s, Pedders had moved to much larger premises and were servicing more than 3,000 shock absorbers per month. By the early 1960s, Pedder realised that he could manufacture a superior product for his 4×4 customer, and the first Australian upgraded suspension range was born. The company made bright red shock absorbers and their reputation grew fast, with a huge level of demand and some glowing reviews.

Never content to rest on his laurels, Pedder then set about developing uprated suspension springs for the 4WD market. Over the coming years, hundreds of coil springs, leaf springs, torsion bars, bush kits, u-bolts and other parts would join the range.

In 1972, control of the business passed to Ron Pedder, Roy’s son. Ron further developed the suspension range, which now covered many different vehicle models, and set out a bold strategy – to open Pedders branded stores. This retail chain grew and grew, and Pedders were able to meet an unprecedented demand for high quality suspension products, and later for brake upgrades. By the late 1970s, Pedders were a household name and the brand was visible all across Australia.

Over the years that followed, Pedders started to grow their international presence to include stores and distributors in Korea, Mauritius, Europe, the Middle East, Thailand, Indonesia, Kenya, South Africa, Malaysia, China, Cyprus and the USA. Pedders had achieved their aim at turning Roy’s one-man business into a worldwide success story, with high quality upgrade parts available for everything from Hilux and Land Cruiser models to the Ranger, L200, D-Max, Patrol, Navara, Amarok and most other 4×4 and passenger car models. In their domestic market, Pedders is the highest-selling aftermarket upgrade suspension brand, and their parts are seen everywhere.
