Trail-Gear was founded in 2005 in Fresno, California, USA, by Matt Messer. As a veteran of the off-roading and rock-crawling world and with extensive industry experience under his belt at Low-Range Off-Road and All-Pro Off-Road, Messer knew an industry that had specialist needs for axles, suspension, conversion kits and driveline upgrades – but the more specialist the needs became, the harder it was to source off-the-shelf solutions.

From off-roading with his dad in his childhood, Matt had grown up as part of the off-road community. The most serious off-roaders and rock crawlers at the time were re-engineering their trucks in a variety of ways, and he saw an opportunity to build his own brand; in many ways starting where the more established manufacturers left off.

From a small workshop in 2005, the company grew and grew, becoming synonymous with rock crawling as a sport and offering an ever-growing range of products from high steer kits to suspension lifts, axles and components, and hard-to-find parts for Toyota, Suzuki, Nissan and Jeep models. Within a few years, the business was operating from a 50,000 sq ft warehouse in Fresno, with an army of staff and some of the industry’s leading designers. The company became more and more seriously involved in professional off-road motorsport, and with the challenges of racing in such harsh conditions, Trail-Gear worked hard to create products which were heavy duty and highly durable but also affordable to weekend rock crawlers and off-road adventurers.

As Ultra4 racing has become an internationally recognised motorsport, Messer has worked with most teams and drivers to build custom solutions for their specific needs. With a team of skilled specialist engineers, Trail-Gear can build just about anything, and their red and orange flamed logo can be found on the side of everything from Hilux and Jimny builds to off-road buggies and desert racers.

One innovation for which Trail-Gear is well known is the IFS Eliminator kit for Toyota model with factory torsion bars. This type of suspension configuration is more road-biased and performs poorly off road, with limited articulation and the risk of fracturing torsion bars if the driver is too enthusiastic. The IFS Eliminator kits allow a live front axle to be fitted in place of the factory suspension, greatly increasing flex and allowing the vehicle to be lifted by up to 5 inches.
