Filter byWarn Industries was founded in 1948 in Seattle, USA by Arthur Warn. Their initial focus was on the commercial and industrial hub industry, but in 1959 Warn debuted a device which would revolutionise the off-road recreational, rescue, recovery and powersports worlds: the electric winch.
Prior to this innovation, early vehicle winches were heavy, slow and underpowered, and the only option for vehicle mounting was the PTO winch, which takes power from the vehicle’s engine. With the advent of the electric winch, the 4×4 world was changed forever.
Early electric winches were high-mount units. High mount means that the winch motor is positioned above the winch drum, so the resulting product is taller and narrower. This was a popular format for many years and indeed Warn still offer a winch in this format – the longstanding and highly regarded M8274 model. However, as tastes changed and customers tend to demand more sleek and easily concealable designs, the low mount winch evolved. With this design, the motors and gearbox sit at opposite ends of the winch, creating the type of winch design which is now ubiquitous in the 4×4 market.
It seems that every new Warn product is a huge success, and this is testament to the focus on quality, durability and innovation which can be found within the famous US brand’s factories and design facilities. Warn are undeniably the world market leader in winching and hoisting, and their products are found in every country on earth.
Users from overlanders to recovery and rescue organisations, charities, farmers, forestry, construction and elsewhere appreciate that a winch is a critical piece of equipment and conscientious buyers go straight to the Warn catalogue and ignore the lesser brands. Many competitors are producing cheap, lightweight, often far-Eastern winches, with poor quality components and little or no spare parts support when things go wrong.
With ranges such as the VR EVO, Zeon, Zeon Platinum, G2 Series, XP, XDC, TI and others, the Warn family is ever growing and there is a winch or hoist for just about every setting, from automotive to industrial, manufacturing, cranes and hoists. On top of the 200+ winches and hoists on offer, there is also as huge range of covers, accessories and spare parts.
When buying and using your 4×4 winch, whether you have a Hilux, a Navara, D-Max, Shogun, Sprinter or just about any other vehicle model, a few vital points most be considered. Firstly, secure mounting of the winch is critical and this often means a winch bumper or hidden winch mount. Secondly, having appropriate and safe recovery gear is a must – a winch is of very limited use without a high quality recovery kit. Finally, correct winching techniques are paramount to ensure safety and to avoid damaging your vehicle or the environment.
