The Mitsubishi L200 Series 4 (also known as the B40, ML and MN) is perhaps the archetypal workhorse pickup truck. Its subtly styled design has won it thousands of fans over the years but a lot has changed in the L200 line over the last 40 years, with the model now onto its sixth iteration.

For the price, you’re unlikely to find a better 4WD truck with its enviable amount of space and snappy acceleration making it a firm favourite among serious off-roaders and Sunday drivers alike. It’s also a deceptively capable off-road machine with excellent ground clearance and a range of driving modes to explore in more recent models.

It’s also a vehicle that upgrades very well indeed. In fact, there are dozens of Mitsubishi L200 upgrades to choose from if you are so inclined. The uniform nature of the vehicle also makes it easy to add and take away components. So you can essentially manifest your rig into whatever you want it to be.

As a blank canvas for 4×4 modders, it’s an absolute joy. But what would we recommend as the top 5 best upgrades for your L200 Series 4?

1. Suspension Lift Kit

While the L200 Series 4 only began production in 2005, those built over 15 years ago might be starting to show their age when it comes to their suspension. If the factory leaf springs have lost their buoyancy and the suspension is generally less responsive than it once was then a complete suspension overhaul might be the most practical solution. In this situation, we’d recommend a suspension lift kit from a quality brand like Terrain Tamer or Old Man Emu (OME). SuperPro also makes a great kit for a more ambitious upgrade.

2. Side protection steps

The Mitsubishi L200 Series 4 is an incredible vehicle but it is also rather large and can be quite difficult to get in and out of. That’s why steps and rails are such popular upgrades for it. They also have the added benefit of protecting the sides of your ride from rocks and debris.

3. Roof racks

If you’re going to be taking your L200 on holiday or going off-road in any capacity then a roof rack is probably going to be in your immediate future. The ARB Base Rack is the ideal choice here as it’s a modular system that can be tailored to your specific needs.

4. Underbody protection

One of the most affordable, easy-to-install and yet profound upgrades you can make to your L200 to increase its lifespan is some underbody protection. The skid plates from ARB will cost you less than £500 and could save you thousands in the long run when it comes to avoiding damage.

5. Snorkel

Yes, a snorkel will make your L200 look like a legitimate off-road beast but it’s not just an aesthetic upgrade. Installing a snorkel is an affordable (around the £300 mark) way to keep your engine clear of debris and water, as it draws air in from above the car rather than beneath it.
