The Toyota Hilux Series 8 (manufactured from 2015 onwards) has been setting the standard in powerful 4×4 pickup trucks for over 50 years now with legendarily solid Japanese engineering and a classic design that has been subtly refined over the years to reflect changing aesthetic standards. There have been tweaks, of course, but the basic aesthetics and reliability that made it so popular when it first launched in the late 60s still rings true today.
It falls somewhere between a rugged runaround machine and a luxury truck (depending on the model you opt for) but one thing all iterations of the Hilux have in common is their upgradability. Because it might be the ideal investment for somebody looking to build their dream rig on top of an already impressive foundation.
With that in mind, today we’ll be looking at the top 5 upgrades that most Toyota Hilux owners choose, particularly if they’re keen off-roaders.
1. Suspension
Suspension is the first place you’re always going to look when it comes to upgrades and the Hilux doesn’t disappoint in the options department. Terrain Tamer manufactures a complete pro suspension kit suitable for many of the more modern models, while the always reliable Old Man Emu offers a range of suspension kits that will improve what can be a rather uncomfortable ride in older models.
2. EVC Throttle Controller
The EVC Throttle Controller is an affordable upgrade that connects to your throttle pedal and allows you to finely tune the responsiveness of your accelerator. Whether you want to sharpen or dampen the throttle response of your Hilux, this is the easiest way to do so without getting a mechanic involved.
3. Winches
We don’t like to think about it but the fact remains that off-roading can be a dangerous pastime if you’re not adequately prepared. Attaching a winch to the front (or rear) of your Hilux opens it up as a potential working vehicle for farmers but it will also give you a greater deal of independence on your off-road adventures. Because, if you get stranded in a difficult situation, a winch could save you a lot of time, money and stress. You can also get hidden winch mounts installed if you want it to sit flush with your bumper.
4. Wheel Arch Kits
Wheel arch kits sit snugly above your wheels and add a little extra heft and personality to your ride. You’ll need a kit such as this one from Kut Snake that is engineered specifically for the model of your vehicle and your installation should be relatively straightforward. There are several options to choose from at various prices and sizes. If you’re looking for the most attractive and durable material, any arches constructed from high-grade ABS are probably the way to go. This material is incredibly flexible and designed to withstand the very toughest of conditions.
5. Roof racks
While, being a pickup truck, your Toyota Hilux already boasts a decent amount of space for carrying everything from luggage and spare tyres to assorted family members, that space is finite. That’s why a roof rack is always going to be a valid option for Toyota Hilux owners. Not only that but there are so many different types of roof racks suitable for everything from canoes and bikes to roof tents and so much more besides.
