Wheel arch kits are one of the most common 4X4 upgrades and are something that many enthusiasts often consider when looking for affordable ways to add a little width and power to their vehicles.

These kits, often referred to colloquially as ‘fender flares’ due to the extra eye-popping glory they bring to a vehicle, fit snugly above your wheels, accentuating their size and power, while also bulking out your body with a bold symmetrical elegance.

But what do you need to consider when choosing a wheel arch kit for your 4×4?

Model

As every model of 4×4 is different in terms of its size, stature and general design, each kit will be specifically designed for your model.

If you have a Toyota Land Cruiser manufactured in 2005, for example, you’ll need a kit that fits this individual model.

Aesthetics

Aesthetic appeal is going to play a major part in your choice. The majority of arches are a standard black textured look, as they are designed to complement your vehicle, not stand out as their own feature.

Whatever style you go for, you’ll want to ensure you’re getting arches constructed from high-grade ABS, as this material is incredibly flexible and is designed to withstand the toughest of conditions.

Price

A wheel arch extension kit is typically going to set you back anywhere between £400 and £500. This might seem like small potatoes when considering what a bold difference it’s going to make to your ride, but do consider that you might need to visit a body shop to fit it for you if you are not comfortable with the job.

Fitting

The arches are generally bolt-on, which means drilling will be required. Cheap flares that can just be stuck on are a hazard and not only run the risk of falling off at the worst possible moment but could even invalidate your insurance. They might also need to be trimmed slightly to fit your specific vehicle.

We always recommend leaving the kit to warm up for at least 24 hours before installation too, as this will allow the material to become more easily workable.

Any good wheel arch kit should also come with screws and rubber trims which are required for proper installation.

The wheel arch is ultimately the part of your vehicle that not only exists so that your tyres don’t protrude beyond the wheel arches (which can often become a problem after wider wheels have been fitted), but to make your off-road beast really stand out.

If your stock arches are looking a little flimsy and you are regularly taking your vehicle off-road and pushing it to the limits then you want people to take you and your car seriously. Without solid wheel arches, you might as well be driving a Mini.
